Michael Kane grew up in Peoria, Illinois, graduate from Peoria Central High School in 1984, and graduated from Illinois State University in 1988 with a BS degree in Biological Sciences. He worked at Abbott Laboratories (far north suburbs of Chicago-IL) until he returned to school and earned a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology from Purdue University in 1996.
He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the pharmaceutical industry at Parke-Davis in Ann Arbor-MI, and accepted a permanent position at Parke-Davis to develop the use of DNA microarray technology in support of drug discovery and disease characterization. His career grew from molecular technology development to scientific project oversight when he accepted the position of Vice President of Research and Development at Genomic Solutions, Inc (Ann Arbor, MI). This position eventually led to an entrepreneurial event where he founded his own biotechnology company based on scientific methods he developed (Nucleico, LLC).
Currently, Dr. Kane is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Technology at Purdue University, and serves as the Lead Genomic Scientist in the Bindley Bioscience Center at Discovery Park, with applied expertise in genomics and biomedical informatics. In addition to his academic role at Purdue and serving as scientific advisory role for a few seed-stage biotechnology companies, he is a co-founder of Broadband Antenna Tracking Systems, Inc. (aka BATS) in Indianapolis-IN and a co-founder of Genomic Guidance, LLC.
His recreational activities include having fun with the kids, fishing trips to northern Minnesota with old friends, building electric cars, building electric guitars, and playing guitar for a local classic rock band.
